What is a hot water heat pump system?

You need hot water to help run your life. From early morning showers to washing the dishes, hot water is crucial for your quality of life. But when your home runs on hot water that’s heated by gas or electricity, your running costs can add up month on month.

A hot water heat pump system is like a reverse refrigerator. Instead of cooling your water, it heats it by taking the air outside of an external unit and passing it through an exchange system - all without the need for solar panels.

More efficient than conventional water heaters, a hot water heat pump helps you to save money with significant savings on hot water-related costs year after year (save up to $3,375 over the life of your hot water heat pump’s lifespan!).

How do hot water heat pumps work?

A hot water heat pump moves heat from one medium to another - or “pumps” it. This is done through the use of a heat exchange that takes low-grade heat from the air outside your Melbourne home.

Here’s an overview of the process:

  • Outside air is drawn into the heat pump by a fan

  • Refrigerant, stored in your heat pump’s piping, is converted from liquid to gas by the warm outside air

  • An internal compressor pumps the refrigerant gas and causes its temperature to increase so that it becomes hotter than the water in your tank

  • The hot gas flows into a condenser, passing heat to your water, then turning back into a liquid and repeat the cycle again as needed

Integrate your hot water heat pump with your home solar for even better results and more savings

Already using solar energy to power your home? The Sanden hot water heat pump is designed to work with your current solar to lower your energy costs and improve the efficiency of your power usage.

How?

Although hot water heat pumps run on electricity, they are roughly 3x more efficient than electric hot water heaters. But if you’re looking for even MORE ways to save, at N Group, we install Sanden hot water heat pumps that align with your current energy usage patterns. That means you can set your new heat pump to start at 10am (when you’re generating solar power), which means you’re using power generated from your own roof panels.

That’s how you reduce power coming from the grid and heat your home’s hot water using roughly one kilowatt for even more savings.

What are the benefits of a hot water heat pump?

Huge savings

Rising energy prices are a reality for all Australians. When you can reduce your energy costs without reducing your hot water output, installing a hot water heat pump becomes a money-saving decision that will benefit your home or business for years to come.

Energy-efficient

At N Group, we’re proud to supply and install Sanden Eco Plus Hot Water Heat Pump technology that uses 0.84kW^^ of energy to generate 4.99kW of heat - this is 80% less energy uses compared to traditional electric hot water systems.

Home integrations

With simple, quick installation outside your home, there’s no need for roof panels (or any roof space at all). Take home integration a step further by connecting your hot water pump with your home solar to reduce reliance on the grid and power your hot water for free.

Aesthetically pleasing

Made in Japan, Sanden heat pumps are super quiet and super clever. Small enough to be installed on your home’s exterior, your neighbours will assume you’ve got a small A/C unit when really you’re heating your home’s water with the most innovative technology available.

Frequently asked questions about hot water heat pumps

Yes. Although hot water heat pumps use external heat to power your hot water needs, the term “heat” is relative. Anything above -10° is considered ‘warm’ and will generate hot water for those cold Victorian nights.

Yes. At N Group, we believe hot water should be energy-efficient AND long-lasting. Sanden’s Australian-made stainless steel storage cells come with peace of mind 15-year warranties, so you don’t have to plan for built-in obsolescence.

Yes. A hot water heat pump is ranked alongside solar energy in terms of environmental friendliness. We’re proud to supply, install, repair, and service Sanden Hot Water Heat Pumps which use the ‘Holy Grail’ of refrigerant - carbon dioxide. As a refrigerant, CO2 is non-toxic, non-flammable, with a negligible impact on global warming. Win-win-win.
